Homeowners tend to shop paint jobs on the brand of paint and the price per room. Neither is what determines how the walls look in five years. Prep does. Paint is a coating, and a coating can only be as good as what it's stuck to.
Proper prep starts with cleaning. Kitchens and bathrooms carry grease and soap film that paint will not bond to, and hallways and stairwells hold more hand oil than people expect. Those surfaces get washed before anything else happens.
Then comes repair. Nail pops, hairline cracks, screw holes, corner bead damage and old anchor holes all get patched, and the patch gets sanded flush — not just filled. On plaster walls in older Clifton and Paterson homes, that can also mean skim-coating a whole section so the surface reads flat under a modern flat or eggshell sheen, which hides far less than the paints your grandparents used.
Caulking is the step most often skipped. The joints where trim meets wall, where crown meets ceiling, where baseboard meets floor — filling those cleanly is most of the difference between a room that looks professionally done and one that looks like it was rolled quickly.
Primer matters where the substrate changes: raw patches, bare drywall, stained areas, and any drastic color change. Spot-priming patches keeps them from flashing — showing as dull patches through the finish coat — which is one of the most common complaints about a cheap repaint.
Only then does color go on. Two coats, cut in by hand at the edges, back-rolled so the finish is uniform, with real drying time between coats rather than a second coat rushed on the same afternoon. And everything not being painted — floors, fixtures, cabinets, hardware — gets masked and covered first, then uncovered and cleaned at the end of each day.
It's slower than a one-day room, and it's why a properly prepped interior still looks right long after a rushed job has started to fail.
